Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia (YKAKI)

This month, Family Care Indonesia volunteers in Jakarta were joined by Miss Indonesia 2009, Kerenina Halim, in their monthly visits to the Foundation for Kids with Cancer. We were happy to have Miss Halim join us and the children were very appreciative of the warm and kind attention she gave them.

We also took the opportunity to present keepsake framed photos of each of the parents with their children which we had made on a previous visit.

Health and Education projects - Atambua

Health and Education projects - Atambua

Family Care Indonesia projects in NTT province over the past four years have included obtaining sponsorship for the building supplies and construction of a new school building in Atambua. This month, we were able to deliver quality metal desks and chairs for this school. Thanks to a concerned donor in Jakarta, these desks and chairs will greatly improve the quality of education. We hope to ship many more desk and chairs to this region in the near future.

FCI volunteers also took time to visit the Santa Angela School in Atambua in order to donate character-building videos and accompanying activity books.

While in Atambua, FCI volunteers met with the head of the BAPEDA (Agency for Regional Development) of Atambua to present an offer from a health unit in Bandung who wish to donate their medical services for children in Atambua suffering from harelip. The BAPEDA and FCI are now working together to establish a time frame for accomplishing this project.

Helping a Needy Orphanage - Medan, North Sumatra

Helping a Needy Orphanage - Medan, North Sumatra

Family Care Indonesia volunteers in Medan regularly visit the Kasih Indonesia orphanage to bring aid and offer comfort and cheer to the approximately 80 orphans living there. This month, FCI volunteers received an emergency call from the orphanage staff with a plea for help.

The staff explained that they were running short of food for the orphans due to the fact that they had to invest what little funds they had in the construction of a new building as part of their relocation plans. FCI volunteers responded immediately to the need and began calling friends and sponsors and explaining the emergency. In a short while—thanks to our concerned friends and donors--a large amount of food was gathered.

FCI volunteers delivered the supplies along with a short program of songs and a motivational talk. All of our efforts were rewarded when seeing the happy smiles on the faces of the orphans. A little bit of love and concern goes a long way!

Race Series Charity Event - Jakarta

Race Series Charity Event - Jakarta

The International Sports Club of Indonesia (ISCIC) held their annual Jakarta Race Series, a charity run. And, as they have done for the past four years, members of Family Care Indonesia volunteered their time to act as staff and coordinators for the event. Approximately 800 to 1,000 people participate. There are two events: One, a 5 km. run and the other, a 2.5 km. fun run.

Each year, FCI is privileged to invite orphans and staff from one of the orphanages we sponsor to participate in the race for free. This year, twenty orphans from Yayasan Bina Sejahtera Orphanage were able to join in the fun. In previous years, a portion of the funds raised goes towards an FCI scholarship program for needy students.
