March 2011 Project Update

Team to Bangka Island

Team to Bangka Island

Family Care Indonesia often sends volunteers to remote areas of Indonesia. Usually this comes about through friends we’ve met while conducting our volunteer activities. These friends then invite us to conduct special projects in other areas of Indonesia.

Recently, one such invitation brought two FCI volunteers to Bangka Island, east of Sumatra. Team to Bangka Island FCI volunteers spent two weeks on the island visiting schools and teaching school children on a daily basis as the focus of this particular trip was teaching and counseling. Volunteers visited many members of the local community and were able to hear firsthand the problems and challenges that the people face. This was an opportunity to establish contacts and survey the potential for future FCI projects in this area.

School Construction in Atambua

This month, construction began on a three room school building in the city of Atambua. Through the generosity of numerous sponsors, Family Care Indonesia volunteers were able to collect sufficient funding for this project. It is estimated that construction will take two and half to three months. The building will serve as an addition for the original school that was built in 2009.

After contacting friends in Jakarta, a new 2,000 watt electrical generator was also donated to the school. This is the second school building in Atambua that FCI has helped to facilitate sponsorship for and is part of our long-term vision for educational improvement in East Nusa Tenggara.

BNN Rehabilitation Center

BNN Rehabilitation Center

The number of residents at the BNN Lido Rehabilitation Center has increased so much that Family Care Indonesia volunteers recently had to restructure their teaching schedule there. BNN residents in the 2011 first quarter classes had an opportunity to practice their English with law students from Northwestern University in the U.S.A.

The law students, who were in Indonesia as part of a research program, concluded their visit with an evening at the FCI center in Jakarta. A former resident and counselor at the Rehabilitation Center, now self-employed, joined the evening event.
